Tourist Guide Manama
Manama is the capital of the island of Bahrain situated in the Persian Gulf. It has a population of about 150.000.
Manama is a very important centre for the economy thanks to the petroleum,
oil refining, dhow buildings, fishing and pearl diving. The strong economy of
the capital made it possible to increase the country’s major hotels, pubs,
nightlife, beautiful shopping and most important tourist attractions. Manama
is also very popular for its different markets where people sell their goods.
Manama has an international airport on the island of Al Muharraq, which can
be reached by a causeway. Further also the University of Bahrain is located
in Manama, it was founded on 1986.
Manama is an Arab city with a rather westernized and modern attitude.
The Bahrain island is rather plane, its highest point is Jabal Ad-Dukhan about 130m over sea level. The northern part is more developed and the island is known since always as a very green country.
In 1958 Manama was declared free port.
In 1971 it became the capital of independent Bahrain.
