Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the city centre is one of the most extraordinary
mosques in the whole Southeast Asia as well as a symbol for the people in Islamic
faith. Its architectural style mirrors the use of elegant materials, ias for
example the notorious Italian marble, granite from Shanghai, English stained
glass and chandeliers,etc. Tourists are kindly asked not to wear shoes when
entering the mosque and dress according to a simple and conservative style.
Festivals are full of colour, enthusiasm and happiness and the youngs mix up
with the olds, with no prejudice in a spirit of unity and brotherhood to share
traditions passed down by ancestors!
Other important events are the Chinese New Year, celebrated by the Chinese Community,
which lasts two weeks and the Christmas Day.
Brunei also offers good possibilities to practice golf, bowling, squash, tennis,
swimming, badminton, snooker, windsurfing, soccer, aerobics along with traditional
local sports: gasing, sepak takraw and kite-flying
Travellers can find something interesting and valuable at the market stalls
or syarikats as well as the local stores
Restaurants do not sell alcoholic drinks, as illegal in Brunei
The most famous shopping mall in Brunei is the Jalan Mc Arthur. Not far away
from town, on Jalan Muara, is Tiong Hin, a popular shopping place for locals
offering a wide variety of grocery and fishing supplies,toys, etc. There are
also shops at the International Airport,where it is possible to get Duty Free
items: CDs, sports equipments and all what in need!
