Hutongs are narrow streets or alleys, commonly associated with Beijing.
These are alleys formed by Siheyuan lines (traditional courtyard residences) and exist maily in the older parts of the city.
Tourists can opt for tours of these Hutongs where they can see the local culture, historic background of these areas and get a more interesting insight into local culture.
There are guided tours available which are narracted and the significance that Hutongs had on the lifestyle and way of living of the Beijing residences is discussed and explained.
Such tours are either by bike, Rickshaw or walking and are organized by Beijing Xinhua International Tours.
Well worth doing to get the true local experienc of living in these areas.
