Chongqing is the largest and most populated of the four municipalities in China. The city has an estimated population of over 31 million residents. In the native language, Chongqing means ‘Double Celebration’. The city has a wealthy mix of mineral resources, evergreen forests, lush flora and fauna and water reserves.
Characterised by a semi-tropical climate, Chongqing is counted as one of the four ‘furnace cities of China’, owing to the blazing hot summers. Winters are wet and foggy with snowfall being a rare event.
Chongqing’s history dates back to the thirteenth century when it was the capital of the Ba Empire. It has been a prominent trading port rich in mineral wealth. The major industries in the city include chemical, textiles, tourism, electronics, iron and steel.
