Dunhuang: Attractions and more...
Mogao Caves
About 25 Kms south-east of Dunhuang City, the Mogao Caves are situated. These are considered as the premier Buddhist location in the country and perhaps in the entire world. The blend of murals, statues and architecture in these caves are a representative of the artistic style of the Tang, Sui and Northern Wei dynasties. Currently, 10 caves and 2 exhibition centers are accessible to the general public. As it is dark in the interior of these caves, tourists must carry flashlights or rent them from outside the cave. Photographic equipment is not permitted in these caves.
Echoing-Sand Mountain
Five Kms towards the south of Dunhuang City, the Echoing-Sand Mountain is situated. This mountain is the result of accumulation of sand equivalent to rice in size. Whenever the wind blows some sound originates from the mountain and if there is a breeze, the sound is identical to that of musical instruments and hence the name. The trek to the top of the mountain is very arduous but after reaching the top it is possible to slide down the mountain which is a wonderful feeling.
