The Potala Palace, founded in 637 is situated in Lhasa in Tibet and was named after Mount Potala, the residence of Avalokitesvara, meaning “Lord who looks down”. Rising 170 meters, this historic building is the greatest monumental structure in entire Tibet. This Palace was once the main residence of the Dalai Lama till the 14th Dalai Lama went to India, after the invasion and failed uprising in 1959. Presently, the palace has been converted into a museum by the Chinese Government. This historic building was marked in 1994 to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Potala Palace is situated in Lhasa in China and is named after Mount Potala. This was the winter palace of the Dalai Lama since the seventh century and symbolizes Tibetan Buddhism.  At present, the historic building is converted into a beautiful museum by the Chinese government. The Arya Lokeshvara is the most venerated statue is housed inside the Phapka Lhakhang and draws thousands of Tibetan pilgrims per day.
