For foreigners visiting Shanghai the language can be the biggest problem. Locals do not normally have a good knowledge of English. It is advisable to book a tour with travel agents as most of the guides speak English.
If you are unable to visit particular attractions while ona tour for whatever reason, the agencies may give a partial refund so dont be afraid to ask for it.
Be careful when on tours and the guides take you to a restaurant. The meals there are usually more expensive and the guide might be getting commission from the owners.
Shopping at local stores is also recommended. It is better than at the 'tourist only' shops. You will also get more unusual gifts.
Visa rules are constantly changing in China, check with your local embassy before travelling.
