The Terracotta Warriors were excavated from an emperor’s tomb in Xian, China

The Terra Cotta Warriors were a part of the massive terracotta army that was excavated from the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. The entire terracotta army consists of more than 8000 warriors and horses, and their purpose was to protect the Emperor and help him to rule in the afterlife.

The warriors were made by craftsmen and labourers, and were mass produced in a series of processes. No two warriors look alike and they vary in terms of physical appearance, uniform and hairstyle, depending on their rank. The figures are brightly coloured, life-sized and appear in different battle formations. The warriors are arranged in columns in the front, whereas the chariots appear at the back.

In 1987, UNESCO included the Terracotta Warriors in the list of World Heritage Sites.
