Baucau has gained its original existence from a city named ‘Vila Salazar’, which was named after the Portuguese ruler António de Oliveira Salazar. It is closely second to Delhi, the capital in terms of area. This city is the capital of the entire Baucau region that forms the eastern empire. The population here is not much as seen by the records, which show 16,000 inhabitants. Baucau is the seat of the highly respected Roman Catholic Diocese, which is one of the two prime community religion holders in East Timor. The city is well connected. Taking an example we can see that the country’s largest airport, the Cakung Airport is just six kilometers away. Most of the people staying here are Christians. The city is fast emerging as a developed estate with a large industrial and trading front. There is an ocean surrounding this city, which also provides some water activities in and around it. The city was demolished almost entirely after some riots that took place around a decade ago, but there is no looking back to this city as it is emerging steadily and at a good pace.
