The jail acquired its name due to the nature of the rooms (designed as CELLS) used for solitary confinement. The jail is now declared as a national memorial and is a place of pilgrimage for freedom fighters. The jail now hosts a sound and light show in English, three days a week. It also has a museum, an art gallery and a photo gallery. Nowadays most of the dangerous and notorious criminals are confined here.
