Tourist Guide Rajahmundry
Rajahmundry is a city and also a municipal corporation in East side of Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. It is located on the holy banks of the Godavari River. It is considered as the fifth largest city in Andhra Pradesh.
Rajahmundry is also known as the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh, which possess a rich cultural past too. The city was also a part of the Madras Province prior to Indian Independence. The population of the city is 812,347.
Historically, it was named as Rajamahendravaram, and it was the second capital of the Kannada Kingdoms. The city has historical background which traces back to 11th century built fine palaces and fort walls. However, new archeological evidence shows that the city may have existed far before the Chalukyas. During the British rule, the name changed to Rajahmundry to undergo a gradual metamorphosis. The city was once one of the biggest cities in South India till the 19th century.
