Goa: Introduction and History

A derivative from the Konkani word ‘goy’ meaning a ‘patch of tall grass’, Goa is the smallest state in India with regard to area and in terms of population it is the fourth smallest.

Goa is situated in Konkan along the west coast of India.

It is ranked as the twenty fifth state in the union of states of India. The total area of this state is approximately 3702 sq.kms.

Vasco da Gama is the biggest city in this state. Panaji, also known as Panjim is Goa’s capital.

Possessed by the Portugese for approximately 450 years (longest held possessions), their culture is still visible in the historical city of Margao.

Well known for architecture, beaches and temples, Goa is visited by thousands of tourists national and international each year.
