The Barren Island Volcano is the singular confirmed active volcano in south Asia.
This volcano is situated about 135 kilometers towards the north-east of Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. As per the records, the first eruption of this volcano took place in 1787. After this eruption, this volcano has erupted minimum six times up to 2006.
These eruptions were from 1789 to 1852. This was followed by two centuries of dormant condition. Then, it erupted again in 1991 and this caused a lot of damage.
As is indicated by the name, the Barren Island is a barren region, where there is no human civilization. However, some goats are found here. Also, some species of rodents and bats like flying foxes are able to continue in the inclement conditions.
This island has a gross surface area of 10 square kilometers and is 3 kilometer long. Within this, the caldera of the volcano has a width of two kilometers. |
