The meaning of Arunachal Pradesh in Sanskrit is ‘land of the dawn lit mountains’.
It is located in the north eastern tip of India, Arunachal Pradesh is consequently known as the ‘land of the rising sun’. A fraction of the famous Ledo Burma road passes through this state which was a salvation to China during World War II.
Mostly covered by the Himalayas, this state is one of the most meagerly populated states of India covering an area of 83.743 sq.kms. It took on a self governing political status in January 20, 1972, hereby being declared as a Union Territory.
The climate is humid and hot at the lower altitudes as compared to the higher altitudes where it becomes exceptionally cold. Arunachal Pradesh experiences the heaviest rainfall in the country with an average rainfall of more that 350 cm.
This Union territory inhabits 26 tribes and a variety of sub tribes which are culturally similar being derived from original mongoloid stock.
