By area, Chhattisgarh is the 10th largest state of India, its name being derived from the numerical word thirty six (in Hindi garh means fort and Chattis means thirty-six) princely states in this area.
The main language of this region is the Chhattisgarh language which is regarded to be a dialect of Hindi. Dialects of Dravidian languages are also spoken amongst different states. Apart from these languages the other languages spoken are Hindi, Marathi, Oriya and varied tribal languages.
