Haryana: Introduction and History

Haryana state lies in the northern part of India.

Towards the north, are Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. Towards the west and south is Rajasthan. Towards the east are Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. This state also shares a boundary with Delhi on three sides.

The height of Haryana alters from 700 to 3600 feet. Haryana has an extreme climate. In summer, it is very hot and the temperature might reach 50 °C. In winter, it is very cold and the temperature might drop to 1 °C.

May and June are the hottest months. December and January are the coldest months.

In the monsoon, the rainfall sums up to about 80 percent of the annual rainfall. Sometimes there is local flooding.

As per the 2001 census, the population of Haryana was 2,11,44,000. 88.2 percent people are Hindus, 6.2 percent are Sikhs, 5.2 percent are Muslims, 0.3 percent is Jain and 0.01 percent is Buddhist.

The state has a rich cultural heritage. The state is a home to people of disparate faiths, cultures and races.

The main languages spoken in this state are English, Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.

There are also some other dialects which have originated from Hindi.
