The Great Himalayan National park
has an area of 1.171 square kilometers at a height of 1500 to 6000 meters.
This park is the home of more than 375 species of fauna. This includes 181 birds, 31 mammals, 127 insects, 17 mollusks, 11 annelids, 9 amphibians and 3 reptiles.
As all of these are safeguarded by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, hunting is not allowed in this park. This park has lush coniferous forests, pristine glaciers, soaring snowy peaks and emerald meadows that are filled with exotic vegetation.
The valleys of Tirthan and Sainj are the habitat of a large number of fauna. Here, one can find wild mountain goats like the serow, goral and bharal and predators like the snow leopard and the leopard and the brown bear.
Some pheasants like the tragopan, khalij cheer, monal and some other exotic Himalayan birds can be seen in this park. |
