The Bandipur National Park is spread over an area of 874.2 square kilometers on the Mysore - Ooty highway and extends along the Tamil Nadu – Kerala border.
The park was declared as a tiger reserve in 1973 and in the next year, Bandipur was announced as a national park as per the Wildlife Protection Act.
Here, there is a dense forest cover and vegetation like Randia, Bende, Dindalu, Kadu Tega, Kooli, Nelli, Bamboo etc. The main fauna found here are Elephants, Leopards, Tigers, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, Black Napped Hare,and several others.
More than 230 varieties of birds have been found out of which some are Crested Hawk Eagles, Shaheen Falcons, Serpent Eagles, Honey Buzzards, Gray-Headed Firhings, Ospreys, Sandpiper.
This park consists of the adjacent wildlife sanctuaries of Wayanad in Kerala and the Mudumalai national park in Tamil Nadu. |
