Periyar National Park is situated in the districts of Pathanamthitta and Idukki in Kerala.

An area of 777 square kilometers is a protected one, out of which the core zone of 350 square kilometers is called as the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve.
Three fourths of the protected region have an unaffected evergreen or semi-evergreen rain forests where the typical tropical trees reach a height of 40 to 50 meters.
Thirteen percent of the region is comprised of damp leaves forest, Seven percent of Eucalyptus plants, 1.5 percent of grassland and 3.5 percent is made of the Periyar artificial lake and rivers.
In this park, 62 different types of mammals have been identified.
There are about 1000 elephants along with Leopards, Foxes, Mongoose, Indian Wild Dogs, Mouse Deer, Barking Deer, Sambar and Gaur as well as 320 different types of birds like the Cormorants, Darters, Racket-tailed Drongos, the great Malabar Hornbill and Kingfishers.
