Kalpeni is considered to be the largest lagoon amongst this group of islands; this lagoon is excellent for boating and kayaking. The main spots are the Baniyan factory and the light house.
A unique feature of Kalpeni is a huge storm bank of coral debris along the south eastern and eastern shorelines where huge boulders were believed to have been thrown up in a storm in 1847.
It was in this island, supposedly, that girls were first sent to school in the time where women’s education was considered to be outlawed.
Minicoy : situated in southern Lakshadweep, this island is the second longest island, the first longest being Andrott. It also comprises of one of the largest lagoons.
Consisting of many villages, each village owns a village house which is beautifully maintained and artistically decorated. This island is an important place for tuna fishing.
Kadmath : comprising of lagoons on its eastern and western peripheries, this island brags of a diving school and a water sports institute. |
