The Park is spread over an area of 1673.93 square kilometers in the Satpura hills. It is one of the last habitats of the Indian tiger in Maharashtra and the core part of the Melghat Tiger Reserve.
Considering the ecological, faunal and floral importance of this region, it was called as a Sanctuary in 1975.
The terrain is hilly and rugged. The forest is a particularly southern dry deciduous forest.
There are 99 grass species, 23 sedge species, 56 climbers, 316 herb species, 66 shrub species and 90 tree species. The fauna comprises of several wild animals like Panther, Tiger, Wild Dog, Sloth Bear, Hyena and Jackal.
The other species are Macaque, Rhesus Monkey, Langur, Wild Boar, Nilgai, Cheetal, Flying Squirrel, Ratel and Barking Deer.
