Manipur is one of smaller Indian states located in North West with population of 2.4 million.
The state’s capital city is Imphal, located near to the border with Myanmar (also known as Burma).
The state is situated in a valley surrounded by Sub-Himalayan Mountains and isolated from the mainland India. The majority of the area is covered by the forest.
The state is considered sensitive border state; therefore, foreign tourists entering the state (by air only) must have a Restricted Area Permit and travel on organised tours arranged by authorised travel agencies.
The state is known for the classical dance style, Manipuri, which originated in the region. The dance is very distinct from other Indian dance forms due to its devotional and lyrical nature. It encompasses lyrical spectacles of music, singing and dance performed by large groups of women or men. Originally, it was performed only in temples.
Mainpur is also the place where the game of Polo originated from. |
