Puducherry, formerly known as Pondicherry, means ‘New village’ according to its literal translation from Tamil to English. This Union Territory is also acknowledged as the ‘French Riviera of the East’.
Pondicherry comprises of four small disjointed districts; Pondicherry, Yanam and Karaikal which is on the Bay of Bengal and the Mahe on the Arabian Sea.
The records of Pondicherry can be lined right back to the 2nd century AD.
The Official dialects of Pondicherry are Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and French although English is generally used for convenience. The regional languages are Telugu and Malayalam. |
