Sambhar Lake is famous for the biggest saline lake in India. Due to this lake, Sambhar is also called as the Salt Lake City.
Sambhar means salt and this lake is offering salt for more than a thousand years now. The Sambhar Salt Lake was owned by the Mughals, Marathas, Rajputs and Sindhias from time to time and this was leased to the British in 1870.
When the country became independent, it took charge of the lake. Currently, the lake is handled by Sambhar Salts Limited, which is a collaboration of the Government of Rajasthan and Hindustan Salts.
The length of this lake is 22.5 kilometers. There are some seasonal freshwater streams like Rupangarh and Mendha that feed the lake. This huge lake is bifurcated into two parts by a stone dam that is 5 kilometers long. |
