Kamakhya Temple
The Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati is situated on the top of Nilachal hill which is 10 kilometers away from the railway station. This was constructed by Narayanan, the Koch King in the 10th century. It is famous worldwide and most respected in the tantrik shrines of Shakti worship while for pleasing the Goddess, sacrifice of animals is a usual practice here.
Vashistha Ashram
The Vashistha Ashram or the abode of sage Vashistha is situated 12 kilometers from the railway station and is a riveting old shrine. Here, there is plenty of greenery as well as three beautiful streams – Sandhya, Kanta and Lalita.
Navagraha Temple
In the eastern part of Guwahati above the hills there is the Navagraha Temple or the ‘temple of nine planets’ and this is also an ancient seat of astronomy and astrology. The central lingam (symbol of Lord Shiva) is housed in a red dome shaped like a beehive and is encircled by nine lingams which represent the grahas (planets) Saturn (Sani), Jupiter (Brihaspati), Mars (Mangal), Venus (Sukra), Mercury (Buddh), Moon (Soma, Chandra) and the Sun (Ravi, Surya).
Shiva Temple
On an island in the midst of Brahmaputra, the Shiva temple of Umananda can be seen. To reach this place, public ferries and motor boats are available from Umananda Ghat.
