Bhagalpur is situated in the Bihar state of Eastern India. It is situated in the southern region of Bihar and is one of the oldest districts. It is placed in the plane of the Ganga basin and lies at a height of 141 feet above sea level. Bhagalpur covers an area of 2569.50 sq.km. It lies between 25.07-25.30 N latitude and between 86.37-87.30E longitudes. As per the 2001 census of India, Bhagalpur had a population of 340,349. Out of this, 54%25 were males and 46%25 were females. Out of the total population, 14%25 were under 6 years of age. Bhagalpur has an average literacy rate of 68%25, which is higher than the national literacy rate of 59.5%25.
