Gaya is famous for its holy sites. The holy sites in Gaya are very special since most of its physical-features have occurred naturally. The sacred ‘Falgu River’ is lined by temples and ghats. Trees like ‘Pipal’ and ‘Akshayavat’, ‘Undying Banyan’, are especially considered sacred by the people. The most popular temple today is the Vishnupad temple, a place along the Falgu River, marked by a footprint of Lord Vishnu. Salvation to the souls of ancestors (Pinda daan) is a ritual followed by the Hindus. Gaya is significant from the point of performing the ‘Pinda daan’.
Bitho Sharif (10km from the main city) on the Gaya - Patna way, is one of the important pilgrimage places here. A large number of Muslims and people from other faiths, from all over the globe visit this place. Celebrations will be conducted every year from 10th-12th of the Islamic month of Shabaan. Gaya’s stable food is common to the rest of Bihar and Jharkhand. The other special preparations found in Gaya are typically traditional in Bihar. Sattu, pittha, litti, marua-ka-roti, pua, etc are some of the most popular dishes. Brahmayoni hill and Bodh Gaya are the other important tourist locations in Gaya.
