The Mahabodhi Temple is situated in Bodh Gaya which is located at ninety-six km from Patna in the district of Bihar. It is believed that at this spot, Siddhartha Gautam (the Buddha) attained enlightenment under the holy Bodhi tree.
It is thus a sacred place for Buddhists and amongst the four holy sites related to the life of Buddha. The original construction of the temple dates back to the 3rd-century BC and King Asoka is considered to be the founder of the temple.
Present temples; however, date back to the 5th or 6th century. The temple is one of the ancient temples built entirely in bricks and still exists from the Gupta period.
The central tower is of enormous height (55 m) and there is a marble walkway around the whole site. There is a meditation hall in the upper shrine. At night, the temple is brightly lit and becomes a visual pleasure.
