Darjeeling is a city in the Indian state of West Bengal. It translates into ‘the land of the thunderbolt’. Popularly known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’, the city is home to a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants. It is famous for its Darjeeling Tea and also the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.
Darjeeling is blessed with a temperate climate with extremely mild summers and chilling winters. Snowfall is rare but mist and fog blanket the city regularly. High rainfall is also a common event.
Darjeeling was the favoured hill-station of the British during the British Raj. It was merged with West Bengal after the independence of India. Today, the most important components of Darjeeling’s economy are tourism and the tea industry, with the latter being the largest employer in the hills.
