The city Diu is located in the state of Daman and Diu.
Diu is an island near the South coast of the Kathiawar peninsula of Gujarat. There is a tidal creek that separates it from the mainland.
The city is at sea level. The word ‘Diu’ originates from the Sanskrit word ‘Dweep’ which means island.
Diu is spread in 38.8 square kilometers area. There is a cool and dry weather. The annual rainfall is about 700 mm.
In Diu, there is a maritime climate and the regular sea breezes have an impact on the temperature. There is a plain topography and the weather is dry but pleasant throughout the year.
In the summer season, the minimum temperature is 20 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature is 36 degrees Celsius. In the winter season, the maximum temperature is 26 degrees and the minimum temperature is 20 degrees.
The tourist season extends from September till May. In summer, the use of cotton clothes is advocated, while in winter, light woolens are advisable.
People here speak English, Hindi, Portuguese and Gujarati. As per the 2001 census, the population of this Diu was 21,576.
