Fatehpur Sikri is a small town with 27,000 inhabitants, in Uttar Pradesh, located 37 km from Agra; it was built to be know as the city of Victory.
Fatehpur Sikri is known for its fortifications built in times of the Mogul emperor, Akbar (1571-1585), when the town was a capital of the Mogul emporium.
The town was created in the middle of the desert in honour of a sheik who foresaw the birth of the emperor’s son as well as to symbolise the power of the Mughal Empire and the ambitious plans of Akbar the great.
The town could not survive as it was built too far from water and many irrigation systems did not prevent it from numerous drowns.
During the emperor time, the town was the cultural and philosophical centre but did not survive. The town was emptied after the death of the emperor and gained the name of “ghost city”.
The well preserved old capital was listed as the UNESCO’s world heritage site in 1986.
