The Basilica of Bom Jesus is located in Old Goa and 10 kilometers from the city of Panaji. It can be reached from Panaji by means of a bus, auto or taxi. ‘Bom Jesus’ means ‘Good Jesus’ and this term was used for Jesus when he was an infant.
This church, built in about 1695, is the first minor cathedral in India, is regarded as the best illustration of decorative architecture in the country and is most popular for the preserved mortal remains of St. Francis Xavier.
It is said that when the body of the saint was brought to Goa, it was found as fresh as ever. This was a miraculous phenomenon and so the body was placed in an air tight coffin made of glass, which was placed in a silver casket.
These mortal remains are displayed publicly and each year thousands of devotees visit this church to see them. Currently, this practice has been terminated to avoid the deterioration of the body.
This church is considered to be a very rich church. Pure white marble is used for the floor of the church and it is adorned with semi-precious stones. The altar is 54 feet in height and 30 feet in breadth.
