The Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is reportedly one of the earliest churches to be constructed in Goa. The current site was chosen as it was a high ground. After being initially built in the 1540s it was rebuilt in 1619.

This church is dedicated to Mary. The interior of this church is simple and the altar on the right is dedicated to Our Lady of Rosary while the altar on the left is dedicated to Jesus.

There are statues of St Paul and St Peter. Towards the right of the main altar in the south transept exists the Chapel of St Francis Xavier and also his idol which was formerly in the Idalcao’s Palace and was transported to this church following the dismantling of the chapel in 1918.

The ‘Bell of the Inquisition’ is a large golden bell which in 1841 was transported from the Church of Our Lady of Grace in Old Goa to this church. In order to hold the weight of this bell strengthening of the arches was done.
