Se Cathedral is the largest church in Asia and is dedicated to St. Catherine as the Portuguese Naval General Alfonso de Albuquerque conquered Goa on 25th November which was St. Catherine’s day.
This church has a Portuguese Gothic style while the interior of the structure being Corinthian and the exterior is Tuscan. The façade is 98 feet high and on the northern and southern sides there are two Manueline style square towers.
In 1776, the northern tower collapsed. The remnant of this tower has a ‘Golden Bell’ which is called so due to its rich sound. Formerly, the relics of St Francis Xavier were displayed to the public in this place.
This church is the seat of Archdiocese in Goa. This church is regarded as one of the most sacred buildings by the Christians and UNESCO has announced it as a heritage site.
This cathedral is open to the public from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm all days of a week except during mass.
