Sabermati ashram in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad on the west coast of India is one of the most interesting cities in the country and certainly in Gujarat. It is a medium sized city which is defined largely by Islamic architecture, in particular some very well renowned mosques and portico. But the reason I recommend this place is that it houses the Ghandi ashram at Sabermati. Set alongside the large and majestic river that divides the city into east and west, modern and not, this place was the heart of much of Ghandi’s activities during his lifetime.

It was from this ashram - a collective place or compound or group of people on his model - that he began the famous salt march which so disrupted the British colonial government.  Nowadays the ashram is open to the public as a museum. It also holds a small library of interesting materials and a bookshop where Ghandi’s works are sold for next to nothing. The most interesting thing though is the museum of his life and political struggles, illustrated with fantastic black and white photographs and quotes from all sorts of personalities throughout his long life.
