Tourist Guide Junagadh
Junagadh lies at the base of ‘Girnar Hills’. From the literary point of view, the meaning of Junagadh is ‘old fort’. It’s also called ‘Sorath’; i.e. by name of previous ‘Princely State’ of Junagadh which had been governed by a Muslim ruler.
Uperkot was the fort which was the residence of rulers of Junagadh. This place has witnessed reigns of Mauryas, Solankis, Mughals, and British in the bygone centuries. During the British rule, it was amongst those 565 princely states who were given the choice of acceding to either India or Pakistan. Though Nawab of Junagadh wished to accede to Pakistan, he couldn’t as he faced strong opposition from local public. As such, he fled to Pakistan (with family) and Junagadh got annexed to India.
Junagadh receives rainfall of around 775 millimeters.
The population as per 2001 census was 168686.
