Panipat is situated 85 kilometers from Delhi on Shershah Suri Marg (GT Road). Formerly, Panipat was a section of district Karnal, but from 1st January 1992 became a separate district that bordered the districts on Sonipat, Jind and Karnal in Haryana.
The area of Panipat is 1268 square kilometers and as per the 2001 census, the population is 0.967 million.
Panipat is very well-known for the three major battles that were the turning points in Indian history. In 1526, the first battle was fought between the Delhi Sultan Ibrahim Lodi and the Mughal Babur.
In 1556, the second battle was fought between the Mughal Akbar the Great and Adil Shah Suri as well as Hemu.
In 1761, the third battle was fought between the Marathas and the Afghans.
The climate of Panipat is hot and humid. During summer, the temperature soars to 44 degree Celsius, while in winter drops to 4 degree Celsius particularly at the end of December and start of January.
