Tourists should avoid the food cooked at the road stalls as they are generally unhygienic and can lead to diarrhoea and cholera. Dengue and malaria are common in India, and travellers should take care to avoid mosquito bites at all times. Light-coloured clothing that cover the hands and legs and mosquito repellents are advisable. 

Tourists are advised to avoid crowded public transportation, if possible and travel in a group. Instances of tourists being drugged and robbed are on the rise. Accepting food and drinks from strangers is not advisable.

Places like Jammu and Kashmir and the north-eastern regions are subject to terrorist activities. Travellers should seek consular advice before entering areas bordering neighbouring countries. 

Although India is a politically stable country, recent spates of sectarian violence have led to loss of life and property. Travellers should avoid such areas and remain indoors till calm is restored.
