Dharamsala is a town in Kangra district in the state of Himachal Pradesh.

The word “Dharamsala” means “rest house.” The town is made up of Upper Dharamsala or McLeod Ganj and Lower Dharamsala.

The distance between these two sections by road is 9 kilometers.

The current Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, resides in Upper Dharamsala and there are a large number of Tibetan exiles in this place.

As per the census of 2001, the population of Dharamsala was 19,034.

The temperature in summer varies from 22 °C to 38 °C. In winter, the climate is very cold as the Dhauladar ranges, which are close to Dharamsala, are covered with thick snow.

The height of Dhauladar hills is more than 15,000 feet and of Dharamsala is 4780 feet. The city offers very beautiful landscape characteristics and hence is called as “Scotland of India.”
