Alchi

One of the most prominent cultural sites in Ladakh is the Chaskor or religious enclave. This has been constructed in the 11th century and is a treasure trove of initial Buddhist art.

The construction of this enclave was supervised by Kaldan Shesrab who was a follower of Rinchen Zangpo. Every day there is a bus from Leh at 4 pm which returns the next morning after departing from Alchi at 7 am.

Lamayuru

The second largest monastic establishment of Zanskar is Lamayuru. This is an old foundation that is linked with Marpa the Tibetan Yogi. Here there is a community of sixty Gelukpa monks.

There is a recently laid rough road by which one can reach in 4 hours by foot. Climbing up to the monastery requires much exertion, however it is worth as there is a breathtaking view of the valley when one reaches on top.

Zanskar

Nearly 20 kilometers towards the south of Rangdum one can see the Pazila watershed. The Pazila Top situated at a height of 4401 meters is a beautiful tableland that consists of two small alpine lakes and is encircled by snow covered peaks.

As one proceeds along the Zanskar roads to the head of the Stod valley it is possible to view the ‘Drang-Drung’ glacier. This is arguably the largest glacier in Ladakh outside the Siachen formation.
