Leh is situated in the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
The height of this city is 3,500 meters. In summer, the temperature may reach 33 °C, while in winter may drop to -28 °C. The average annual rainfall is 90 mm.
As per the census of 2001, the population of Leh was 27,513.
The religions practices in Leh are Islam and Tibetan Buddhism. There is a cold war between these two communities.
Leh is connected to Srinagar by the Srinagar-Leh highway and this distance is 434 kilometers. Leh is also connected to Manali by the Leh-Manali highway and this distance is 473 kilometers. However, both these roads are functional on a seasonal basis.
The Leh palace, although in ruins dominates the surroundings. This palace was constructed in the 17th century by King Sengge Namgyal.
In the mid-19th century, the Kashmiri forces besieged the palace and hence the royal family moved to Stok Palace on the southern bank of the Indus.
