The Jama Masjid is a historical mosque that is located in the midst of Leh and is the biggest mosque of Ladakh.
This was constructed in 1666-67 A.D. as per an agreement between the then ruler of Ladakh Deldan Namgyal and the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. According to this agreement Ladakh had to pay yearly tribute to the Mughal government and this government would offer protection to the territory of Ladakh.
In Leh there is a small mosque that is older than Jama Masjid. As the population of the Muslims increased and there was an influx of traders from Kashmir and Central Asia there was a growing need to construct a larger mosque.
Due to these reasons the construction of Jama Masjid took place. In this mosque there is a memorial popularly called as Shah-I-Hamdan which is dedicated to a Sufi saint called Mir Sayed Ali Hamdani who is said to have offered namaz (prayers) in the Jama Masjid.
