The Charar-e-Sharif is the most sacred Muslim shrine in India.
It is located about 40 kilometers from Srinagar on route to Yusmarg and close to Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
This wooden shrine is almost 600 years old and popularly called as Hazrat Sheikh Noor-ud-din Wali.
This shrine honors a Sufi saint called Sheikh Noor-ud-Din Noorani who led a very simple life and when he passed away in 1438 the shrine at Charar was visited by 0.9 million people within two days of his death.
This shrine was destroyed twice, first when the Pakistani Army and Indian Army fought against each other and second in 1995 due to Islamic militants.
However, disregarding the destruction both Hindus and Muslims continue to respect the shrine.
