The Hazratbal shrine is a sacred Muslim pilgrimage destination located on the banks of Dal Lake opposite Nishat Bagh in Srinagar.
In 1699, the Prophet’s hair reached Kashmir and the Muslim Auqaf Trust constructed a marble structure to retain the hair and this structure is called as Hazratbal shrine.
Moi-e-Muqqadus or the Prophet Muhammad’s hair is preserved in this shrine and hence traveling to this shrine is truly a special experience. Prior to the construction of the Hazratbal shrine, the sacred hair was preserved in the shrine of Naqshband Sahib.
The Hazratbal shrine is about 25 kilometers from the Badgam district of Srinagar and is known by several names like the Dargah Sharif, Madinat-us-Sani and the Assar-e-Sharif.
In 1623, the Ishrat Mahal was constructed at the site of the shrine by the brother of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan. Further, the Emperor himself visited the site and issued orders that a prayer house must be created at the site.
