The Jama Mosque is located at Nowhatta in Srinagar. This was constructed by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD. This structure was extended by Zain-ul-Abidin, the son of Sultan Sikandar.
The highlights of this mosque are the grand Indo-Saracenic architecture, 370 wooden pillars and a beautiful courtyard. Another important characteristic of this mosque is that one feels very peaceful and calm inside the mosque in contrast to the activity in the old bazaars that surround it.
Each Friday, a very large number of Muslims garner at this mosque to offer prayers. This mosque has gone through difficult times. Three times it was ruined due to fire and was reconstructed each time. The most recent restoration was in the era of Maharaja Pratap Singh.
