Jharkand, which derives its name as the land of shrubs, is a state in eastern India that came into existence in 2000.
It borders among others with Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
With population of nearly 27 million, it belongs to one of the poorest Indian states, despite its strong base for industry.
The state is mostly known for its reach of mineral and forest resources. It is often called in hindi, Vananchal, which means forest area.
Almost one-third of the population of Jharkhand belongs to indigenous tribal communities. Santhal, Oraon, Munda, Chero and Gond are the most important ones. These tribal groups are known for their different languages (such as Santhali, Mundari, Khariya, Panchparagnia) and festivals (Sarhul, Karma, Sohrai, Badna); most of which still continue to be a major part of the economy.
As the capital city of this Industrial state, Ranchi was the summer capital of Bihar during the British colonial times.
It is a famous tourist destination in the region due to beautiful water falls and temples.
