Close to Mysore on the top of the Chamundi Hills lies the popular Chamundeswari Temple. Goddess Chamundi is regarded as the incarnation of Goddess Parvati Lord Shiva’s consort.

The word ‘Chamundi’ means terrible and this is one of the names of Goddess Parvati who is in an angry mood to kill the demon. It is believed that the foundation of this temple was laid in the 12th century while the tower is only 300 years old.

The highlight of this temple is a seven-storey and 40 meters high ‘gopuram’(tower) that is decorated with beautiful carvings. It is said that the statue of the Goddess is made of solid gold and the gates of the temple are of silver.

A jewel called Nakshatra-Malike has thirty shlokas (hymns) inscribed on it in Sanskrit language is also present in this temple. Another important characteristic of this temple is that there is a statue of the demon Mahishasura close to this temple that is 16 feet in height.
