Maharajah's Palace, locally known as the Amba Vilas Palace has become the city’s landmark structure. It combines a number of architectural styles including Dravidian, Oriental, Roman and Indo-saracenic. It was designed by Henry Irving, in the 20th-Century with fifteen years of continuous work.
Made of gray-granite and rich pink-marble, this is a 3-storied palace. The entrance to the palace is through the Gombe Thotti or Doll’s Pavilion, which houses the traditional dolls from the 19th and 20th century.
There are 7 conons in front of the pavilion which to this day are used during Dussehra festival. Elephant gate gives way to the center of the palace. Stained glass covers the marriage pavilion, which is at the south of the building.
The ambavilasa or Diwan-i-khas was used by the king for private audience. This room is amongst the most-ornate ones in the palace, which is on the first floor. Diwan-i-aam is situated on the second floor.
Many visually pleasing rooms are located throughout the palace such as displays of royal armory, portrait gallery, jewelry and costume collections, magnificent chandeliers, stained-glass ceilings and doors carved in Mahogany. Many temples are also situated in the palace premises.
