About 140 kilometers to the south-west of Bangalore on the banks of the river Kaveri lies the village called Somnathpur where one can feel the eternal stillness and freshness of the air.
Here in between the perpetual rural serenity one can view one of the grandest Hoysala monuments called the Kesava Temple. This is located about 45 kilometers from Mysore and was constructed in 1268 A.D.
This is regarded as a completely evolved style of Hoysala architecture. It is a very impressive edifice as it is really unique in design, ideal in proportion and the stone carvings appear as striking wonder in stone.
This shrine is situated in the central part of the walled compound which is surrounded by an open verandah that has 64 cells.
The temple is identical to a star in shape and is mounted on a raised platform where there are three beautifully carved pinnacles that in the past housed three nicely carved icons of Venugopala, Janardhana and Kesava.
Currently the idol of Lord Kesava is missing from its place however the remaining two are maintained in their place in the original form. In front of the temple is an inscribed stone which describes the full regal title of Narasimha III (1254-91 A.D.).
The inscription states that the king was called by several names like Pratapa Chakravarti, Sri Vishnuvaradhana, Sri Vira Narasimha, Hoysala Bhujabala etc.
