St. Francis Church at Fort Kochi is the first European Church in India. Vasco da Gama, who was the first European to come to India, was buried at this Church. It is open on all days from morning to 6 pm.
This church was initially dedicated to Santo Antonio, who was the patron Saint of Portugal. This church is located at Parade Road and 2 kilometers to the west of Mattancherry.
The history of this church demonstrates the progress of the European powers in India, from the 15th to the 20th century. Vasco da Gama came to Calicut in 1498.
He was followed by the Portuguese under Admiral Pedro Alvarez de Cabral. They built a fort and within this the Church was built in 1503. This was initially a wooden structure dedicated to St. Bartholomew.
Then, in 1506, the Cochin Raja allowed the Portuguese viceroy Dom Francisco Almedia to reconstruct the structure in stone masonry.
In 1516, the new church was constructed and dedicated to St. Antony.
